Is your roof prepared for winter storms?
Winter storms lead many residents to realize that their roof may not be able to handle the harsh conditions that New Jersey’s winter storms have to offer. A simple call can save homeowners thousands.
Take action early.
Heavy Snow — the leading issue to roof leaks in the winter. Every year New Jersey will get that heavy, wet snow that weighs a ton when shoveling. Well consider your roof’s structure when it freezes and sits for a week before melting. Especially older houses, the roof will begin a slow leak and in the peak of winter, it makes roof repairs difficult.
Ice Dams — this is the buildup at the edge of the roof, near the gutter. With all of the snow melting during the day and refreezing at night, the bottom of the roof is taking a lot of weight. The bottom of the roof where it will meet the interior walls is a hotspot for leaks to start.
Maintain — common things like singles and more uncommon things like the rubber around the plumbing pipe. The rubber experiences many different seasons and will dry rot in 3 to 5 years. This is a simple fix yet most people are unaware of the possibilities.
Add Insulation — extra insulation will help with a number of things. Mainly, it will prevent any pipes from freezing but it can also help prevent the attic getting too cold and can therefore help melt the snow (and ice dams) faster.
Trees Are Dangerous — only if they’re within 30 feet from your house. The heavy snow we experience every year does take down full sized trees but if not, you can bet a huge branch will be making landfall.
Overall, a home’s roof is the most essential piece to a house. Without it, there is no shelter from the environment.
REMEMBER: Leaks can start months in advance before seeing them on the ceiling. Call a guy (preferably us) and get a free roof check. (732) 873-0369
